Language Education

English Language Programme at Anderson Secondary School

Overview

English is the lingua franca of business and diplomacy, of science and technology and will remain so in the foreseeable future. Although English is widely spoken in Singapore, language and communication demands have increased considerably with Singapore’s growth as an open, knowledge-based economy. It is therefore crucial that high levels of English competency are attained. The English Language programme at Anderson aims to develop in our students a good proficiency in the language through a contextualised, meaningful approach to English learning. Above all, we hope to instil in students a deep appreciation and love for the language.

Higher Mother Tongue Language (HMTL) Programme at Anderson Secondary School

Overview

Knowing our MTL gives us confidence in our culture and identity as a people. It is important that our students have a good command of the MTL, which will gain them considerable advantages and wider opportunities in Asia, the fastest expanding region globally. At Anderson, we believe in nurturing students’ interest and passion in the MTL, and to enable students to study the MTL to as high a level as possible. To this end, students with the aptitude and ability are encouraged to offer Higher MTL (HTML) in Anderson so that they can maximize their potential through a vibrant offering of rigorous enrichment programmes.

Higher Chinese Language (HCL) Programme

Anderson Secondary School strongly believes in instilling in our students a love for Chinese Language and culture. This is done through creative ways of teaching, a structured reading programme, and organising a wide range of enrichment programmes in various aspects such as cultural and aesthetics. We hope that by encouraging our students to participate in these activities, it will further expose them to important aspects of Chinese culture and to ignite their passion for the language. On top of that, local learning journeys related to what the students have learnt in their textbooks are organised such that students can deepen their learning and facilitate a greater appreciation in the language and culture.

Higher Malay Language (HML) Programme

The HML programme aims to enrich and stimulate the learning experiences of students. Students have the opportunity to participate in various enrichment activities to motivate them to be effective speakers and readers of the Malay Language. On top of a very rigorous HML programme to equip students with a good command of the language, our customised enrichment activities are designed to further develop the language ability of students who excel in the Malay Language. We hope that our students can attain a higher level of proficiency and a deep appreciation and love of Malay Language, Literature and culture.

Higher Tamil Language (HTL) Programme

To serve our HTL students well, we believe in encouraging them to have a lasting interest in the language and to have a good command of both spoken and written Tamil. As the number of HTL students is relatively small, we put emphasis on differentiated instruction to help our students learn the language to the best of their ability. Besides organising enrichment programmes to further enhance students’ proficiency in Tamil Language and culture, local learning journeys such as the visit to Singapore Press Holdings are also organized to make learning more interesting and engaging.
