Service & Student Leadership Committee aims to develop Andersonians who will contribute to school and nation.
In alignment to our school vision to create “A Caring community of Thinkers, Innovators and Leaders who inspire and serve”, we look at developing servant leaders who are noble in character, active and concerned in giving back to the community. Therefore, the SSL Programme aims to inculcate Habits of Highly Effective people and imbue qualities of Servant Leadership amongst Andersonians, such that they acquire essential knowledge and competencies for Excellence in future Endeavours.
Service Learning and/or Values – in – Action (VIA) are mandatory platforms structured for Andersonians to put into practice the knowledge and competencies that they have acquired through school wide and customized programmes. Through these VIA platforms, Andersonians will be able to sharpen their leadership skills, and appreciate the difference they can make to the community of under-privileged in the school, and the nation.
Examples of VIA will be environment based such as school, park and coastal clean ups since 2013, and community based such as advocating to acts of graciousness while taking the public transport, food donation and distribution drive for the under-privileged in our community.
Delivery of SSL programme is illustrated as such:
As part of the Sec 1 Values In Action (VIA) Programme, Anderson Secondary collaborated with Singapore Mass Rapid Transit (SMRT) for the SMRT Ambassadorship Programme, where our Secondary One students volunteered as Service Ambassadors to promote a gracious and enjoyable commuting experience among commuters by encouraging those with prams to use the elevators and approaching commuters who are in need of help.
At the same time, they also helped to raise awareness to the public to refrain from feeding monkeys in the park by helping to paint the wooden stumps which would be placed in the parks.
Secondary 2s contribute their efforts by participating in food donation and distribution drive, towards benefiting the under-privileged in the community. At the same time, they also advocated to the Anti-Mozzie movement in the nearby housing estate, to educate members of the public to adopt good practices to prevent the breeding of Aedes mosquito which is the cause of the Dengue Fever outbreak.
Upon proceeding to Upper Secondary, Andersonians would gain better insights on organizational skills while undergoing training in Service Learning, after which they would put into practice what they have learnt and contribute actively back to the community.
To further widen horizons, insightful VIA activities may be made available for upper secondary students, such as the Community Builders when Andersonians helped to conduct spring cleaning for the elderly who stayed on their own, so that they are in time for Chinese New Year celebration.
As part of the Servant Leadership Programme, and also in conjunction with SG50, our Sec 2 Class Leaders initiated a food donation drive to collect essential food items such as rice, cooking oil, milo, biscuits and instant noodles for the elderly beneficiaries living in the Ang Mo Kio neighbourhood.
The donation drive received strong support from the Anderson school community and the collected items were transported directly to Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre. Through this project, our class leaders and the student population develop a greater sense of empathy towards the basic needs of the elderly in our community and took concrete actions to address these needs.
